A little knowledge goes a long way.

How to plant each type
Rhizomes, stems, rosettes, carpets, and floaters need different treatment. Get the base right.

Light & CO₂, in balance
Understand why more light does not automatically mean better growth—and when added CO₂ helps.

Plant melt: what to check
Separate normal adjustment from ongoing decline by inspecting the base and watching new growth.
Live aquatic plants for your aquarium.
Choose a growing style that fits your lighting, layout, and maintenance routine.
Which aquarium plants are suitable for beginners?
Java fern and anubias nana are useful starting points for a lower-light aquarium. Both grow slowly and can be attached to wood or rock. A rooted plant such as Cryptocoryne wendtii green adds a different texture in the midground. Compare each plant’s needs with your actual setup before choosing.
Do live aquatic plants need injected CO₂?
Some aquarium plants can grow without injected CO₂ in a suitable lower-demand setup. Expect a slower pace, keep lighting moderate, and maintain a consistent feeding and water-change routine. Fine carpets and more demanding stem plants may benefit from added CO₂. Our lighting and CO₂ guide explains how to balance those choices.
Should every plant be planted in the substrate?
No. Swords and crypts need their roots in the substrate with the crown exposed. Anubias and Java fern need their rhizomes above it, mosses can grow on hardscape, and floating plants belong at the water surface. Read our planting guide before positioning a new plant.
