Your first planted aquarium

A practical sequence for choosing plants, arranging a layout, and getting through the first few weeks.

Live plants arranged in a freshwater aquarium

Start with the tank you have

Make a short list of your aquarium’s size, water temperature, lighting, substrate, and inhabitants. Choose plants that suit those conditions before buying equipment to suit a photograph. A shaded, low-light layout can be just as intentional as a brightly lit carpet.

Build a simple planting plan

Choose a few complementary forms: a taller background, a smaller midground plant, and an attached plant or moss for the hardscape. Java fern and anubias are useful starting points for wood and rock. Keep a clear viewing area and allow room for plants to mature.

Prepare before you plant

Position stable rocks and wood first. Remove pots, weights, and as much growing medium as you can without tearing roots. Rinse plants, inspect them, and separate a large portion into smaller planting groups. Keep plants damp while arranging them.

Begin with a consistent routine

Use a light timer and a modest initial schedule. About six hours per day is a useful starting point for many new planted aquariums; adjust gradually after observing growth and algae. Match feeding to your substrate and fertilizer instructions. Record what you change so you can see what helped.

Plants do not replace cycling

A planted aquarium still needs a functioning biological filter and appropriate water testing before animals are added. Do not use healthy-looking leaves as proof that ammonia and nitrite are safe. Choose livestock and water conditions together with your planting plan.

Look for progress, not instant perfection

New leaves and roots tell you more than a single old leaf. Remove decaying material, keep up with water changes, and make one adjustment at a time. Photograph the tank weekly from the same angle so slow improvements are easier to see.
